Marguerite Reed

Special Guests

ICT Comic Con and Science Fiction Expo is pleased to welcome Marguerite Reed author of “Archangel”. She was a 2016 nominee for the Phillip K. Dick Memorial Award and the recipient of the “Special Citation of Excellence” for “Archangel.” Marguerite Reed’s short stories have appeared in Clean Sheets, Strange Horizons, and Lone Star Stories. She is a passionate advocate of science and science fiction. She lives just a little east of the 100th meridian with her husband and daughters in Wichita, KS.

The Earth is dying, and our hopes are pinned on Ubastis, an untamed paradise at the edge of colonized space. But such an influx of people threatens the planet’s unstudied ecosystem — a tenuous research colony must complete its analysis, lest humanity abandon one planet only to die on another.

The Ubasti colonists barely get by on their own. To acquire the tools they need, they are relegated to selling whatever they can to outside investors. For xenobiologist Vashti Loren, this means bringing Offworlders on safari to hunt the specimens she and her fellow biologists so desperately need to study.

Editorial Reviews

“Reed is a skilled storyteller and the world of Ubastis is a vivid creation, with a Muslim culture that is simply part of the overall setting rather than a driver of the plot. Vashti is a troubled, fascinating protagonist whose story ends on a cliffhanger, with greater battles for the fate of Ubastis and her own family yet to come.”
—Publishers Weekly

“A solid debut.”
—Strange Horizons

“Reed writes like a techno-Valkyrie with a flaming sword for a pen. Her prose will cut you, the action will make you sweat, and the characters will break your heart then patch it up again. This is science fiction adventure that attacks you like a Beast.”
—Charles Coleman Finlay, editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction

“Marguerite Reed is a brave and audacious writer, with a strong and original voice.”Archangel Book Cover
—Gardner Dozois, editor of Year’s Best Science Fiction

“Author Marguerite Reed’s first full-length novel, Archangel, presents readers with a fully formed, well-considered universe populated by believable characters and with a strong yet flawed female hero science fiction fans will love rooting for.”
—Shelf Awareness

“Marguerite Reed makes us ache and cheer for the lush xenobiology of Ubastis . . . The intimate portrayal of characters coupled with dazzling scientific and social speculation make for a great read.”
—Andrea Hairston, winner of the James Tiptree Jr. Award and the Carl Brandon Parallax Award

Gary Miller

Special Guests

ICT Comic Con and Science Fiction Expo is pleased to welcome Gary Miller as a featured guest! Gary Miller, born in Kansas City, MO and raised in Wichita, KS, remembers having a love for monsters as early as three years old. He clearly recalls being nine when he saw The Empire Strikes Back with a group of friends, and afterward, explaining to them in detail how stop-motion animation works and trying to convince them to help him make their own movie. Miller did experiment making short films, both live action and animation, by the age of 12. He continued his interest in monsters as well, creating masks and make-ups. In high school, Miller got the chance to design his own Frankenstein’s monster make-up for a play, in which he starred as the Dr. At age 17, Miller was working in a video rental store when he met Leif Jonker. Jonker gave him the opportunity to create a variety of gory make-ups and creatures for the film Leif Jonker’s Darkness. Miller was also asked to take on a leading role, acting in the film. This is something he had dreamed of, following in the footsteps of one of his childhood heroes, Tom Savini. Leif Jonker’s Darkness took several years of work for both Jonker and Miller, but was eventually completed and has been released worldwide on VHS and DVD. Miller has received much praise from horror fans over the years for his grotesque contributions to the film. In the years since, Miller has collaborated with Jonker on several projects, including the trailers for Demon Machine and Skull Full. He has also supplied make-up and special effects for four films (Fearsome, 20 Funerals, Dinner-No Movie, and The Mark) and an episode of One Tree Hill, while living in North Carolina between 2003 and 2004. Once Miller moved back to Wichita, KS he would begin working with Jonker on Leif Jonker’s Darkness all over again, aiding in the creation of a special edition, two-disc DVD. This work did pay off in seeing Leif Jonker’s Darkness getting a limited theatrical run, that became a week long party for everyone who had been involved years ago.
